COPIED FROM CHEATCC

To Helghan and Back

by Adam Brown

When Killzone 2 was announced, the trailers caused many gamers to debate whether the visuals were in-game footage or just prerendered video. After the game was released, these arguments seemed like a waste of time since the game was one of the prettiest first-person shooters (FPS) on the market. Fortunately, since the game was already so visually striking, Guerilla Games didn’t need to spend much of their development effort trying to improve the visuals for their upcoming sequel, Killzone 3. Instead, the team has been able to focus on fixing common complaints about Killzone 2, adding more variety to the gameplay and game world for the sequel.

Killzone 3 picks up directly after the events of the last title, with the Helghan homeworld reeling from a nuclear detonation. Even with the Helghan military still shaken by the explosion, Sev and Rico must quickly make their way across the planet in a desperate attempt to survive. While I was unable to play the game from its outset, I was given a chance to check out a portion of the fourth chapter in the game.

This level immediately showed off one of the improvements made over Killzone 2: it took place in a snowy and white landscape. While the environments in Killzone 2 did look impressive, they were far too dreary and similar. Stepping away from the abundance of grays and browns of its predecessor, Killzone 3 will show off more varied locales on the Helghan planet. This time around, we can expect more snow-covered environments and jungles to make up the experience rather than just an endless and depressing urban landscape.
